The Glock is the most widely used service pistol in modern times, which is truly impressive for a company that was founded to make curtain rods. Gaston Glock had no experience making firearms, but he had experience making polymers. He brought together top European weapons experts, created the Glock 17 prototype in 1982, and the rest is glorious Austrian history.
What Was Glock First Pistol
Glock pistols are semi-automatic, short-recoil, bolt-action, bolt-action pistols. Well, most of them are - the rimfire G44 is a recoil operated pistol and the only gun that broke the mold. Glock pistols come in different calibers and different sizes. These weren't the first polymer frame pistols, but they were the first polymer pistols to be hugely successful.

The G17 was the first model built and designed to fill a need in the Austrian military. The specific needs of the Austrian Army drove the development of the weapon and define Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian Army needed a safe, lightweight, high-capacity, and reliable semi-automatic pistol, and the Glock filled that need.
Glock has a simple way of naming their pistols. Each model is given a number after the letter G, which predictably stands for Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the gun itself and may seem arbitrary to most - for example, the G45 is not a .45 caliber pistol, it's actually a 9mm.
Numbers are assigned to designs as they start, not in the order in which they were released. So while the G20 and 21 started development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.
The G17 hit the streets at a time when manual gun safeties were commonplace. Glock's Plastic Fantastics don't have manual safeties, but that doesn't mean they aren't safe. Glock refers to its pistols as the Glock Safe Action Pistol which refers to the three built-in independent safety devices.

The trigger safety is the famous little doohickey in the middle of the trigger. Your finger presses on the trigger safety as you pull the trigger, so without engaging the trigger safety, the trigger cannot be pulled.
The needle safety prevents the pin from advancing when the firing pin is cocked. As the trigger is pulled, the trigger rod pushes the safety pin up and out of the way. If you release the trigger before firing, the pin safety automatically snaps into place.
A fall arrester is a device that does exactly what you think. If you put the gun down, it makes sure it doesn't fire. As you pull the trigger, the trigger rod lowers the safety ramp and allows the pin to pop out.
The Glock is currently in its fifth generation. New generations are coming as Glock makes changes, both externally and internally. There is no timetable for when Glock generations end or begin, they improve as needed.

The appearance of a new generation does not always mean that previous generations disappear. Often newer and older generations of Glocks are built side by side.
There are also guns that exist outside of the designated Glock generations. Some weapons are ubiquitous and may not have the generation markers used to determine which generation a weapon belongs to. Some guns are also split generations, most commonly between Gen 2 and Gen 3 guns. Glock enthusiasts often refer to them as Gen 2.5 guns.
Gen 1 - The first Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: these are guns that work. Gen 1 consisted entirely of one gun, the Glock 17.
Gen 2 - Glock added different sizes and calibers to the Gen 2 models. A metal serial number plate was introduced, the guide rod system became a one-piece design, checkering was added to the front and rear of the grip, and the magazine base was modified.

Gen 3 - The third generation is where rails become a common option on guns larger than subcompacts. Finger grooves have been added to the grip and scallops are cut into the left and right sides of the frame which serve as thumb rests.
Internal changes include a cross over the trigger pin to reduce pressure on the locking block. The extractor also now raised when the chamber was loaded and acted as a loaded chamber indicator.
Gen 4 - With the Gen 4, Glock made the pistol grip slightly shorter and added a hinged backstrap system to change the size of the grip. The grip also has a more aggressive texture and the magazine release has been made reversible for lefties.
The Gen 4 also included a dual spring recoil rod assembly that reduces felt recoil. Gen 4 was also the introduction of MOS guns which allowed for easy mounting of optics.

Gen 5 - The last generation of the Glock is the Gen 5. These guns saw the removal of the finger grooves, the magazine well was developed for faster reloading, a large relief cut was made in the trigger guard for higher grip, and the slide lock is now . ambidextrous.
In addition, Glock added a new racing barrel to the guns and the cross pin above the trigger guard was also removed.
